Seattle-Tacoma International Airport announced a plan to get every single flight departing the airport to run on biofuel. The airport underwent a feasibility study for the plan, presented at a Jan. 12 event. The study was the first regional assessment of its kind in the United States.
There have been around 2,500 biofuel test flights flown around the world in which commercial planes successfully traveled thousands of miles while eschewing jet fuel for algae, cooking oil and industrial oilseed crops, reports Seattle Weekly.
Right now, “the only airport in the country that uses any biofuel in its regular operations is LAX, where United Airlines has a three-year contract with a company called AltAir Fuels to use a small percentage of biofuel in its Los Angeles flights,” the article reads.
However, besides that contract, “there is not a commercial supply of aviation biofuel in the country,” said Carol Sim, environmental affairs director, Alaska Airlines. “We can’t just go buy fuel.”
The study aimed “to send a market signal to potential fuel producers” that there is a demand. Now, it’s up to Sea-Tac to figure out the economics and logistics of making the plan a reality.
