Santorini is the stuff of bucket lists. The Greek island is famous for its sun-bleached, cliff-hugging villages perched dramatically above an ancient volcanic caldera. And it’s definitely been discovered, as the thousands of visitors who pour onto the island every day prove.

In 2015, Santorini saw a record number of cruises, with more ships docking there than any other island in all of Greece. Around 4,000 cruise-goers disembark every day on Santorini. That’s a ton of people, and the result is massive overcrowding, especially at the most photographed viewpoints, and potential environmental degradation.

Now efforts are underway to potentially limit the number of cruise visitors that arrive each day. Last month, we reported Cinque Terre in Italy is capping visitor numbers to help preserve the charm of these quaint, remote towns. Now, we wait to see if Santorini — and perhaps other destinations — follow suit.
