It feels like nothing can ruin a hotel stay faster than an unreliable internet connection. Work slows down, and video streaming and communication screech to a halt as frustrations mount. HighspeedInternet.com pulled together a study ranking hotel chains with the best complimentary, premium and fastest WiFi.

The report ranks national hotel chains based on the average internet speeds at the properties. The report is split into complimentary, premium and overall WiFi offerings.

For the fastest complimentary WiFi connections, Rodeway Inn properties rank highest, with 7.66 Mbps average download speeds. Following Rodeway is America’s Best Value Inn, Quality Inn and Suites, Super 8 and Days Inn. Days Inn rounds out the top five with 4.79 Mbps.

For premium WiFi speeds, Econo Lodge takes the cake with speeds averaging 8.48 Mbps, followed by Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Hilton Hotels. Hilton Hotels completes the premium top five with 7.73 Mbps speeds.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the slowest complimentary WiFi is 1.9 Mbps, offered by Hampton Inn and Suites. The biggest takeaway from this section is the difference in speed between complimentary and premium WiFi at Hilton hotels. Complimentary Hilton WiFi comes in at just 2.42 Mbps.

In the grand scheme of things, even the premium WiFi speeds are subpar for things like downloading large files and streaming video. According to the report, streaming video requires a minimum connection speed of 1.5–25 Mbps for a stable connection.

HighspeedInternet.com measured the top 20 U.S hotel chains based on how many properties each has in the portfolio, then used data from HotelWiFiTest.com to come up with averages for the highest ranking hotels.
