Maine was the main attraction for artist Marsden Hartley, who painted numerous scenes of his home state. The Met Breuer location of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City will present “Marsden Hartley’s Maine” through June 18, when the exhibit will move to the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, Maine, from July 8–Nov. 12.
Working in the early 1900s and influenced by Japanese printmakers Utagawa Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai; American painters Winslow Homer and Albert Pinkham Ryder; and French modernist Paul Cézanne, Hartley’s use of rich, saturated colors brought Maine’s coasts, people and interior landscapes to colorful life. The exhibition will feature 90 paintings and drawings drawn from his large body of work. For visitors to the state wishing to explore the specific locations that lent inspiration to the artist’s work, Maine’s state tourism website will feature a map of Hartley’s footsteps and information on museums, libraries and locations where his original work can be enjoyed.

Sep 30, 2026Review: Sushi by Scratch at Grand Hyatt Deer Valley
Husband-and-wife team Phillip Frankland Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee made their mark by reinventing the term “hidden gem” through their surprising and intentional collection of destination restaurants. Even at a time when the San Fernando Valley was not known for innovative 5-star dining, the Lees’ concepts gathered such a strong buzz that discerning diners cheerfully followed them “over the hill.”
