In the last month, TSA workers at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport confiscated more guns than ever. Guns are a hot topic in America with an ongoing debate about whether or not U.S. gun laws need more restrictions. Currently, passengers can fly with guns in checked baggage if the right documentation is completed.

By the end of May, TSA recovered 108 guns at Atlanta for the year. This time last year there were only 91 guns confiscated. It’s concerning the amount is rising from year to year, but it should be comforting for guests to know TSA is doing its job well and making sure all guests are safe.

Being the busiest airport in the world, with more than 260,000 passengers daily, only confiscating 108 guns is relatively low, but could be lower as passengers sometimes forget they have the gun in their baggage. For example, in 2014, popular rapper Waka Flocka Flame was taken to court over a handgun in his carry-on. He claimed it was his wife’s bag and had no knowledge of it being in there.

Even though the airport understands this happens, they do not treat it lightly. Fines can reach up to $13,000 and first-time offenders are subject to a $3,900 fine. Fines alone should deter people from trying to sneak in guns and remind others they should check their luggage before bringing it onboard. When a gun is discovered, TSA calls the Atlanta Police Department to take over.
