Rancho Bernardo Inn is a landmark Southern California resort as well as a San Diego-area institution. While the 62-year-old resort stretches across 265 acres, the way it is designed practically makes it an extension of the Rancho Bernardo neighborhood. The ambiance, staff and amenities bring a lovely spin to “traveling like a local.”

This welcoming sensibility is adapted for the 21st-century traveler thanks to an extensive 2023 renovation across the 286-room Spanish Revival-style resort encompassing many of the suites and rooms, public areas, landscaping, and golf course and restaurants. However, the integrity and charm of the original architecture is maintained. Renovated rooms have dark bronze, terracotta and light blue accents which perk up the whites and beiges, while the hotel’s “signature” quatrefoil imparts a greater visual sense of continuity. Studio Suites with outdoor spaces have fire tables and comfortable patio seating. Top suites, such as the Palacio and Castillo, have a residential feel with such features as a separate living room with a fireplace, wet bar, and dark wood flooring and ceiling work.

Corporate guests and private event planners looking for the perfect Southern California milestone event or conference site will probably be drawn to its six-decade event track record. Its “one-stop-shopping” appeal encompasses a well-appointed spa, multi-award-winning restaurants, and historic golf course planned by William F. Bell in 1962, which hosted noted PGA and LPGA tournaments in 1964, 1978 and 1979. The setting itself is further enhanced with numerous gardens and three opulent pool areas.

There are also complimentary weekly tours of the property’s Chef’s Garden, providing an immersive look into the resort’s approach to farm-to-table dining and the cultivation of organic herbs, heirloom vegetables and spices that feature prominently in all of the menus.

Fine-dining restaurant AVANT enjoys a reputation for its artistic use of local produce and ingredients. The more casual Veranda serves up a diverse selection of solid American, Mediterranean and Mexican dishes that reflect the San Diego palate. A lobster roll-soup combo regularly sells out, the burgers are nearly flawless, and plenty of salads and light dishes abound. Veranda’s breakfast chilaquiles topped with birria are impressive, with its mix of flavor profiles and the right amount of spice and heat. The grab-and-go Café Grenada doubles as one of the resort’s gift shops, offering coffee and tasty breakfast and snack items.

The Spa at Rancho Bernardo Inn’s status as a destination day spa is validated through its recognition as Best Day Spa of North Inland, San Diego by San Diego Union Tribune readers. It also features premium spa products and services as well as a nicely curated boutique area. The geography and garden setting, however, make it stand out as an oasis of serenity, not only from the rest of the property but also a guest’s everyday life.

Other amenities and perks include free parking and WiFi, along with large flat-screen televisions, Keruig coffee makers, in-room safes, microwave ovens, cribs and rollaway beds upon request.
