One of the lesser-known treasures of exploring Portugal’s Alentejo region is boating on Lake Alqueva, Europe’s largest manmade lake. Located in the southeast, the lake meanders for about 60 miles through olive groves and vineyards, skirting the shores of picturesque villages and tiny islets ideal for picnics, sunbathing or fishing. The Amieira Marina is a perfect launch spot, where friendly and knowledgeable staff of Nicols River and Canal Boat Rentals run you through the basics of navigating and mooring one of the spacious and comfortably equipped river cruise-style motorboats (cabins, shower, kitchen, GPS, sonar). No boating license is required, and the boats can be hired for a single morning or afternoon cruise, or a multiday excursion. Bicycles can be reserved to carry on board for exploring the lakeside hamlets including Aldeia Juromenha, where you wander through small museums, unique shops and tiled chapels, and sample the region’s selection of stunning wines. The one not to miss: Terras D’ervideira, a blend of fruity Antão Vaz and floral Roupeiro grapes — summer, stashed in a glass bottle. You can always let someone else dock the boat.
