In an incident that managed to completely avoid absolute disaster, a passenger on an international flight on Delta Air Lines found a loaded gun in the bathroom. The passenger promptly gave the gun to a crewmember, who returned it to its owner: a federal air marshal.

Apparently the air marshal, a rookie, left her loaded weapon in the bathroom by mistake on a flight from Manchester, England (MAN), to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport last month.

The agent remains in place despite the incident.

Apparently air marshals are not given on-the-job training, confirmed by John Casaretti, president, Air Marshal Association, and a former air marshal, to CNN.

“These rare incidents must be thoroughly investigated and local managers should take appropriate corrective action,” Casaretti said. “A field training officer program and thorough mentorship of new officers can reduce similar performance issues. Air marshals work in punishing conditions, labor under poor leadership and have seen their law enforcement functions curtailed by an administration that lacks vision. The problem is not the air marshals, it’s the TSA.”
