Although low-fare airlines are notorious for adding on fees to low fares — making it difficult for budget travelers to actually benefit from the cheap prices they advertise — Norwegian is taking yet another step to set itself apart from the low-cost, long-haul airlines changing air travel.
As of January 2019, Norwegian Air offers free WiFi service on select trans-Atlantic flights. Since 2011, the airline offered this service on its European routes, but this will be the first time a low-cost airline offers in-flight WiFi for no extra charge on flights across an ocean.
Norwegian does, however, have a tiered pricing approach to accessing this service. The Basic option is free and allows passengers to perform standard internet functions such as reading and replying to e-mails, sending WiFi–based text messages like iMessages and WhatsApp messages, and scrolling through social media. Travelers can upgrade to the Premium option for $14.95 for three hours of premium service strong enough to stream videos on services such as Netflix or YouTube.
To start, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft flying among Boston (BOS), New York (JFK) and London (LHR) will offer this free service.
