Nearly 50 people were visiting New Zealand’s White Island last week when it erupted in volcanic fury. The eruption left at least six dead, though the final death toll can’t be confirmed yet. The island is popular with tourists and, according to a report from CBS News, is about 30 miles off New Zealand’s shore.
First responders got 34 people to safety, but many of them sustained major external burns and damage to their respiratory systems. The nation’s prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, released a statement saying the island showed no signs of life following the eruption.
The devastation continued past the initial eruption. Into late last week, the island continued to vent heat and mud, implying the island isn’t finished with its deadly volcanic activity. The increased activity also made it impossible to recover the bodies of the deceased, the AP reported.
Geonet, New Zealand’s seismic activity-monitoring agency, continues to post updates on the likelihood of increased activity on the island. As of Wednesday, the island displayed characteristics suggesting a medium likelihood of further activity, meaning there was a roughly 40–60 per cent chance of further seismic activity in the following 24 hours. There is a low chance of the eruption’s ash reaching and impacting New Zealand proper.
The volcanic tremor on the island declined, but is still elevated from the island’s traditional baseline, and the situation remains volatile. Before the recent episode, the island erupted continuously between 1975 and 2000. Smaller episodes occurred in 2012 and 2016.
