American Airlines announced it will make it slightly more difficult for members of its loyalty program, AAdvantage, to achieve elite status.
Currently, AAdvantage members who also carry the airline’s Aviator Red World Elite MasterCard can earn up to $3,000 in Elite Qualifying Dollars when they spend $25,000 in one year, and those who held the AAdvantage Aviator Silver card could earn $3,000 more in EQDs when spending an additional $25,000 in one year.
Beginning in 2019, however, cardmembers of the Red card will be required to spend $50,000 in one year to earn the $3,000 qualifying dollars. American Airlines’ reason for this decision comes down to lack of interest and use. AAdvantage members can still earn elite status with American by spending $12,000 on travel directly with the airline in one calendar year.
Newer members who signed up for and were approved for the card in the second half of 2018 can enjoy the original benefits through 2019.
