The late American photographer and filmmaker Paul Strand was known for his gift of capturing the essence of his subjects — whether poignant landscapes or portraits. The Southwest and Mexico, New England in the 1940s, and his private garden in Orgeval, France were each of particular inspiration to him.
Strand continued to explore the medium of photography through documentary film work that included the silent film Manhatta, made in 1921, and Renes, commissioned in 1936 by the Mexican government. Strand went on to become a founder of the Photo League, a group consisting of photographers who used their work to advance sociopolitical causes.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art has had a significant Strand collection numbering in excess of 600 prints for some time, but new acquisitions of 566 master prints from Strand’s negatives and 1,422 images purchased from the Paul Strand Archive at the Aperture Foundation have amplified the permanent collection to impressive proportions.
