The majority of U.S.-based female business travelers expressed safety concerns or worries that impacted their work trips, according to a new report from the Global Business Travel Association in partnership with AIG Travel.

The survey asked 503 women about the topic and 83 percent said they had one or more safety-related concerns or incidents in the past year — 90 percent said safety concerns impacted how they used their personal time while traveling for business.

The main concerns were general safety (78 percent), sexual harassment and assault (72 percent), travel to certain countries and cities (68 percent) and assault or kidnapping risk (65 percent).

The report is called Perceptions of Safety for Female Business Travelers, and it looks at how these concerns impacted work trips and what businesses are doing to address them. Safety concerns impacted booking behavior, with women saying they were more likely to make daytime flight bookings or pick central lodging locations. It also impacted where they would travel, how often and productivity levels.

“High levels of concern have a tangible impact on business travel for women,” said Amanda Cecil, senior vice president, GBTA. “Previous GBTA research has shown the immense impact travel experience can have on productivity and business results while on the road. Ultimately all travellers want to be productive and get business done, so understanding the specific risks female travellers face on the road can allow travel buyers to play a critical role in addressing these concerns.”
