There’s something special on view by appointment from Sept. 10 through Nov. 2 at Helicline Fine Art in midtown Manhattan. HIRSCHFELD: STROKES OF GENIUS celebrates the work of seminal artist Al Hirschfeld. Known for his brilliant caricatures and renditions of stars from stage and screen, Hirschfeld was renowned for capturing the very essence of Broadway and Hollywood magic through flowing lines that developed into the new modern art form of interpretive expressionism.

“Al Hirschfeld holds a very special place in my heart,” said gallery owner Keith Sherman. “Art is a second business for me, as my primary work is running a Times Square-based PR firm. I represented Al for the last 15 years of his life and the Al Hirschfeld Foundation since it was formed more than two decades ago. I am over-the-moon excited about offering these classic Hirschfeld original drawings and lithographs.”

More than four dozen signed and numbered original drawings and lithographs make up the exhibition. Included are images of famous faces such as Judy Garland, Carol Channing, Elvis, Fred Astaire, Clint Eastwood, Duke Ellington, Jay Leno, Sammy Davis, Stephen Sondheim, the Marx Brothers, Mary Tyler Moore and Dick Van Dyke.

The show coincides with the release of The Al Hirschfeld Foundation’s new book, HIRSCHFELD’S SONDHEIM, to be published by Harry Abrams Comic Arts Sept. 9. This will be the first volume in a series of deluxe, oversized, 11-by-14-inch Hirschfeld poster books comprising more than 50 drawings of Stephen Sondheim, along with his most popular musicals, plays and films. The book will also feature 25 full-page removable images that can be framed and mounted. In addition to being on view at the private gallery in Manhattan by appointment, the exhibit can also be enjoyed remotely here.
