The desert of Phoenix, Ariz., settles into cooler autumn weather in time for the Lost Lake Festival, Oct. 19–21. A grand mash-up of music, food, games and art, the three-day event is under the planning and direction of the same team behind the Bonnaroo and Outside Lands music festivals.

While you’re in town, be sure to check out new exhibitions at the Phoenix Art Museum. Until Dec. 2, “Modern Simplicity: Selected Gifts from Elaine and Sidney Cohen” is on view in the Asian Gallery. Traditional Japanese ceramics by modern artists are showcased, exemplifying how advances in glazes, kilns and clay helped redefine the creation of ceramics.

Until Oct. 14, “To Be Thirteen: Photographs and Videos by Betsy Schneider” can be seen in the Norton Photography Gallery. The exhibit, and result of photographer Betsy Schneider’s nationwide odyssey to chronicle the experience of what it means to be 13 by 250 children, includes 40 large-scale photographic prints, eight video projections and a special archive made up of art pieces created by the former 13 year olds featured in the exhibition.
