The inter-island ferry chugged along the east coast of Jost Van Dyke — the smallest of the British Virgin Islands’ four main islands but a favorite stop for the yachting crowd and tourists. We went ashore at the Great Harbour dock and walked past beachfront shops and bars to Foxy’s, a bar and restaurant that has acquired an international reputation over the past 40 years.

Bikini tops and other memorabilia from wild parties of decades past adorn the rafters of the open-air structure. On New Year’s Eve, during the bar’s famous Old Year’s Night celebration, Great Harbour fills with boats and the partying lasts until dawn. We arrived in the heat of the day, enjoyed a quiet lunch of grilled fish — and perhaps too many of the bar’s special rum drinks, which went down easily. While I napped in one of the hammocks on the beach in front of the bar, my photographer snapped a picture of me. It later appeared in a Playboy feature on famous Caribbean bars.
