Hotel Sky in the Sandton district of Johannesburg, South Africa, became the first establishment on the African continent to use automated attendants with the recent introduction of its robot staff.
The robots, known as Lexi, Micah and Ariel, are part of the hotel’s solution to the current desire of travelers to stay socially distant during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lexi, Micah and Ariel can deliver room service, provide travel information and carry up to 660 pounds of luggage. Guests can choose to interact with staff or make use of the robots, all controlled through guest phones.
The robots also serve as a protective measure for hotel staff. If guests should find themselves suffering from coronavirus, Lexi, Micah and Ariel will be deployed to offer service to them.
CTRL Robotics supplies the droids. In a recent World Economic Forum article, CTRL’s CEO Steve Pinto noted the robots can also scan guests’ facial expressions. “It helps management to understand how customers are experiencing the facilities at the hotel.”
