The James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pa., unrolls a special exhibition of photography by Philadelphia native Charles Sheeler. Charles Sheeler: Fashion, Photography, and Sculptural Form will be on view until July 9. A noted photographer for Condé Nast — where he produced an impressive body of work from 1926–1931 ranging from fashion images to portraits for Vanity Fair and Vogue magazines — the collection showcases Sheeler’s previously undiscovered works. Though trained in Impressionism and that school’s approach to landscape painting, he developed his own style, now known as Precisionism.

Sheeler’s introduction to photography followed the purchase of his first camera in 1910, and led to a career that encompassed both fashion and exteriors, including his enduring images of Machine Age New York and its Art Deco skyscrapers. The exhibition includes a centerpiece of 85 portraits and fashion photographs on loan from the Condé Nast archives in New York, featuring the splash and sparkle of the Jazz Age in photographs of starlets, models and dancers from the Ziegfeld Follies. Paintings by Sheeler and examples of fashions from the era, along with multimedia vignettes, supplement the exhibition.
