A new study by HomeAway suggests leisure travel may make some of us happier than a romantic date or a work-related accomplishment. When respondents were asked what made leisure travel so endorphin-inducing, they pointed to spending quality time with loved ones during travel as their No. 1 reason, followed by being close to the beach, and being able to spend time outdoors in good weather.
However, the study also showed the feelings of post-vacation euphoria only last an average of one week, prompting 22 percent of travelers to book another trip immediately after their vacation is over. Others try to keep the vacation vibe going, with 41 percent posting photos from their trip to social media, 26 percent indulging in food and drinks from their destination, 19 percent listening to vacation playlists and 17 percent discussing the trip with fellow travelers.
What kind of leisure travel results in the most happiness? The majority of respondents voted for their first vacation with their children, followed by their honeymoon. Only 3 percent chose their destination bachelor or bachelorette party as the happiest trip of their life to date.
These same travelers are looking to get as far from work as possible while away. The data revealed 37 percent switch off work phones and disable their email while on their trip, 24 percent refuse to partake in any work conversation and 19 percent avoid seeing or reading the news.
The survey was conducted using responses from 4,375 adults with children under the age of 16, residing in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal and Italy.
