Is Glamping Still a Thing?

by Nicole Quaste

Feature

Glamping took the travel world by storm since roughly 2006, offering people a way to enjoy the outdoors without sacrificing the comforts of home or a hotel. Short for glamorous camping, glamping rarely involves an actual tent, but instead can take place in anything from a yurt or a pod to a villa or a treehouse. It’s simply a way to enjoy nature without sacrificing luxury.

The concept worked its way into the mainstream over the past decade, but is glamping still a thing or is it simply a passing trend nearing the end of its journey?

Since the concept of glamping was introduced, hospitality companies around the world capitalized on the elevated demand for a rustic-meets-comfortable accommodation experience. Creative options emerged, the most notable of which can be found on Glamping.com, which features nearly 1,000 properties around the world. With so many well-established glamping sites and glamping-inspired hospitality companies popping up, it seems the trend is here to stay.

According to a recent survey by Ask Your Target Market, 69 percent of campers said they enjoy camping because it allows them to spend time outdoors, and 45 percent like it because it lets them experience new locations. However, only 28 percent enjoy tasks like setting up the campsite and making their own food, and 48 percent dislike not having access to certain amenities.

While the term glamping might not appeal to everyone, it does appeal to a large number of people who love the outdoors but not necessarily every little thing that comes with camping. As more brands and companies continue to break into this space, it’s clear glamping is more than a passing trend, though its gimmicky name may fall out of favor. It provides another option for travelers aside from a traditional hotel who may not be up for a rustic camping experience. And in the burgeoning world of experiential travel, glamping offers a great way to experience the natural world while still feeling safe and comfortable.
