According to a survey by Travelzoo, many international travelers are ranking the United States as their top destination for the upcoming year. The online study was conducted using data compiled from more than 5,000 survey respondents from eight countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Germany, Canada, the United States and China.

The United States was named as the top destination for respondents from Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada and France. Respondents from Spain named domestic travel as their No. 1 choice, followed by travel to the United States. German respondents also named domestic travel as their No. 1 choice, but did not include the United States in their choices, opting instead for travel to Spain and Italy. The United States saw the biggest increase in popularity from British respondents, who, in 2015, didn’t even place the United States in their top three preferences.

Sixty-four percent of respondents admitted they planned to avoid any destination where a terror attack had occurred over the last 12 months, and said the most important aspects when considering a destination were climate, affordability, culture and safety.

“The U.S. is more popular this year for a number of reasons, including an increase in direct flights with aggressive fares,” says Richard Singer, president, Travelzoo Europe. “British tourists can find return flights to New York and San Francisco for under £400. The U.S. is also viewed as a safe destination. After the terror attacks in Tunisia, Egypt and Paris, many British tourists are considering alternative destinations. We expect to see a sustained increase in demand for long-haul destinations as new flight routes make them more accessible and affordable.”
