A giant, sparkling white fir tree and decadent holiday brunch in a historic Rocky Mountain setting? Please and thank you! It’s all happening at historic Hotel Boulderado in Boulder, Colorado. Guests will be greeted by sparkle and light as they enter — the hotel’s enormous lobby tree is a local tradition, chosen each year through a partnership with Native Nursery in the nearby town of Golden.

Opened New Year’s Day 1909, the hotel is a beloved local landmark that’s hosted famous guests including Clarence Darrow, Helen Keller, Robert Frost and Louis Armstrong. Early stars of stage and screen Ethel Barrymore and Douglas Fairbanks Sr. also slept beneath its roof. The five-story structure — a blend of Italian Renaissance and Spanish Revival architecture — enjoys the recognition of membership in the Historic Hotels of America and a listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the 160 guestrooms and suites feature either historic Victorian-era décor or modern mountain chic.
On Thursday, take in a stand-up show at Underground Comedy Showcase. On weekends through Dec. 17, special holiday teas are served on the hotel’s mezzanine, with the tree in full view. The mezzanine is also the setting for a sumptuous holiday buffet on Christmas Day, where dishes include chef-carved whole leg of lamb; maple-glazed, bone-in ham; stuffed red bell peppers; cracker-crusted Verlasso salmon; honey-buttered roasted parsnips, turnips and tri-colored carrots; shrimp and crab cocktail claws; bourbon pecan pie; a chocolate station; and many other dishes.

The holiday menu at the hotel’s Spruce Farm & Fish restaurant and The Corner Bar includes full regular menus, plus plenty of treats and new specials such as pork belly mac and cheese, gnocchi pesto and blackened snapper and crab etouffee.
Ring in 2023 and help celebrate the anniversary of the hotel’s original opening with live music, a Champagne toast and late-night snacks at License No. 1, the property’s speakeasy-style cocktail lounge. Sleep in, then head over to Boulder’s pedestrian-only Pearl Street Mall to walk off dessert and enjoy some local shopping. Pearl Street Mall lies just a block from the hotel.

The best history and civilization museums curate and display artifacts that reflect the culture in which they were created. If the exhibits draw you in and capture your imagination for a few hours, they have fulfilled their mission. Museums dedicated to human rights, on the other hand, go further, painstakingly developing themed exhibits to encourage critical thinking through depictions of how deeply injustice, corruption and cruelty impacted a society.
