British Columbia may be a long way from the Swiss Alps, but the destinations are connected by history. The theme for the debut Mountain Festival in Golden, B.C., Celebrating Swiss Guides in Golden, commemorates the daring Swiss adventurers and pioneers who left a lasting impression on this part of Canada’s Rocky Mountains. Throughout the weekend of May 17–18, the documentary film Swiss Guides in Western Canada — Beyond Adventure will play at the Golden Cinema with multiple showings.
The festival will also feature guided tours of the Walter Feuz house located at Edelweiss Village, and an exhibition of photos at the Art Gallery of Golden taken from the private collection of Syd Feuz, Swiss-themed entertainment and food at Spirit Square, and an exhibition of Bruno Engler photos at the Purcell Heli-skiing Lodge. On Sunday, May 18, there’s an invitation-only reception hosted by the Swiss Consulate featuring guest speaker Susan Engler, author of Bruno Engler Photography: Sixty Years of Mountain Photography in the Canadian Rockies (2001). During the weekend, many area restaurants will offer Swiss-themed specials, and Swiss artisan foods will be available at the Golden Farmers’ Market.
