The High Sierra mountain town of Twain Harte, California, has officially been named an Audubon Bird Town. The honor follows the Central Sierra Audubon Society’s — the local chapter of the National Audubon Society — area beautification project.

“Bird watching is a large and growing segment of the outdoor travel market,” said Lisa Mayo, president and CEO, Visit Tuolumne County. “This is a great match for people who travel for hiking, fishing and nature. The Bird Town designation is an exciting new asset that we will be proud to include in our promotions. We see all kinds of possibilities.”
Visitors may catch glimpses of some of Twain Harte’s feathered residents, including Northern Flickers, grosbeaks, black phoebes and ravens. Additionally, there are more than 40 hand-painted illustrations created by local artists depicting the town’s feathered residents.

Strategically placed along walkways, in parks and outside of businesses, these illustrations connect residents and visitors alike with the wide and colorful range of this area’s avian wildlife. An online Find the Birds guide is also available, along with printed versions accessible at the town’s new Meadows Park.
Located in Tuolumne County, Twain Harte’s official Bird Town sign depicts a full-sized local bird. The Bird Town idea can be credited to CSAS president and long-time Twain Harte resident Gail Witzlsteiner, who wanted to offer a community-centered, educational project for the organization.
“We think this is a great way to create awareness of birds and their names, engage kids and adults alike in a nature hunt, and promote Twain Harte with something that’s fun for all ages,” said Witzlsteiner.
CSAS was assisted by Twain Harte Chamber of Commerce, Community Services District and Mother Lode Art Association to launch in time for summer.
Witzlsteiner also had help from her husband David Tozier, who designed and built the park’s new information sign, and placed hand-painted bird signs around the town.
