The hotel is said to be frequented by the spirit of Jesse Driskill, who constructed the property in 1886. The scent of cigar smoke in public spaces allegedly announces his presence. A life-sized painting of Jesse is displayed in the hotel lobby, and guests can stay on the lookout for him during the daily 4 p.m. history tour.

Other spectral residents sited by hotel staff and guests include groups of party-goers dressed to the hilt in ball gowns and tuxedos gliding off elevators when there are no festivities. Post-tour, feel free to mull over your experiences at Driskill Bar while enjoying a seasonal spiced drink and live music. Stay for Sunday brunch and indulge in a Texas-shaped waffle created by Pastry Chef Kristen Groth.

At beachside Hotel Lucine in Galveston, travelers can enjoy fall celebrations including the Harvest Moon Regatta on Oct. 17. This annual offshore sailboat race can be viewed from comfy chairs along the Seawall. On Oct. 19 and 20, ARToberFEST gets underway with a juried fine art festival, live music and plenty of great food set amidst shops and galleries along Postoffice Street. Later, Oct. 25 and 26, the Islander Oktoberfest provides a setting of live music; dancing (yes, that includes a Chicken Dance competition); food vendors; and a Biergarten of great brews, including pumpkin beers from some of the island’s own craft breweries.
