Listed as a UNESCO Creative City, Shenzhen is known throughout China — and increasingly worldwide — as a center for architecture, art and design. Throughout the Futian Central Business District, business travelers can glimpse office towers and hotels designed by such award-winning firms as Rem Koolhaas’ Office for Metropolitan Architecture. The Shenzhen Stock Exchange building, completed by OMA in 2013, features an elevated, three-story “miniskirt” around the base of the tower.
Housed within a restored industrial building, the OCT Art and Design Gallery (closed Mondays) showcases works from highly regarded Beijing artists. The glass and steel warehouse holds regular exhibitions for graphic design, fashion and industrial design. Within the OCT Art Terminal, visitors can also view dance performances and multimedia installations and stop for coffee at a number of trendy cafés and bars. On the first Sunday of every month, the complex holds a market where local artists sell handmade postcards and prints, jewelry, clothing and crafts.
