This past May, the location of Dunfermline in Fife, Scotland, was granted status as a city of its own during Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Not too shabby for a town that’s actually been around for a while, boasting structures dating to the 11th century.
Situated in Fife, about 30 minutes from Edinburgh on the north side of Forth Bridge, the newly designated city is the location of numerous historic sites, including Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum, Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries, the 11th-century Dunfermline Abbey & Palace and Abbey Church of Dunfermline, famous as the final resting place of Robert the Bruce and nine other Scottish monarchs.
Outdoor lovers can enjoy the area at Pittencrieff Park or at Dunfermline Golf Club. The club features 18 holes, 6,121 yards and is a par-72 parkland course designed by J. R. Stutt. The actual clubhouse is a listed building dating back 600 years.
Visit between Sept. 6 and 11, and you can enjoy a celebration of comedy, theater, music, film and literature at The Outwith Festival. Through Oct. 23, Kirkcaldy Galleries hosts Jack Vettriano: The Early Years. This extensive exhibition of works by the artist includes a selection of his most famous pieces, along with a rejection letter he once received from art school.
