If you can find a couple of hours in a busy schedule for a little sightseeing, consider visiting one of Delhi’s most notable monuments and getting a dose of ancient history in the bargain. Qutub Minar is the tallest minaret in India, measuring 237.8 feet high. Construction started on this imposing sandstone and marble structure in 1192.  Historians believe it was probably built to commemorate a victory, since victory towers were popular with leaders during this time period.  Considering its height, it must have been one heck of a win.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the surrounding archaeological area, known as the Qutub complex, consists of funerary buildings, including the impressive Alai-Darwaza Gate, built in 1311, and two mosques. The Quwwatu’l-Islam Mosque is the oldest in northern India and is unique in that it was built of reused materials from 20 Brahman temples. Though it is mostly in ruins, the decorations — primarily geometrical patterns and floral motifs — are still impressive.

A team of gardeners keep the complex’s grounds in great shape, making the gardens a cool haven of green in an otherwise frenzied city, just the place to recharge your batteries before heading off for a power lunch.
