Could spacecraft compete with airlines for long-haul travel routes? That could become a reality as soon as 2030, according to a report by financial services company UBS.

The report estimates the value of the private space flight industry could rise from its current $400 billion now to $805 billion in the next 10 years. By then, space tourism could be worth $3 billion, and long-distance space transport could be valued at $20 billion.

The report also showed point-to-point travel by rocket might compete with traditional airline travel on flights lasting 10 hours or longer. For example, a flight from New York to Shanghai is currently 15 hours, but could be flown in just 39 minutes by rocket.

“While space tourism is still at a nascent phase, we think that as technology becomes proven, and the cost falls due to technology and competition, space tourism will become more mainstream,” wrote Jarrod Castle and Myles Walton, analysts, UBS.

“Space tourism could be the stepping stone for the development of long-haul travel on earth serviced by space.” The report also said if it succeeds, the new industry could “cannibalize” the airline industry.
