Airplane lavatories are already notoriously small, but now the water closets on the newest class of Boeing 737 Max planes are more confining than ever, and passengers and flight attendants are complaining.

American Airlines flight attendants say the new 737 Max jets, designed to offer a longer range and lower cost option, have sinks so small passengers can only wash one hand at a time. They also say the small space ends up splashed with water when the sinks are used, and they’re temporarily blocked into the galley whenever both lavatory doors are open.

Passengers complain, too: “I fit but my sides touch the wall and the sink while facing the toilet,” noted Gary Leff of View from the Wing. The restrooms were made smaller to allow an additional 12 seats on the plane.

In response, American Airlines lowered the flow of water into the sinks to reduce splashing, but not much can be done about the elbow room.
