China will contribute around 19 percent to the world’s demand for new planes over the next 20 years, thanks to an aviation sector expected to require around 7,400 new passenger and freighter planes.

The news comes from an Airbus study, the 2018–2037 Global Market Forecast. It showed most of these planes will be in the small segment, single-aisle planes operating on domestic and regional routes. Some 6,180 of the 7,400 new planes are in this category.

Just 240 planes will be needed in the large segment and the extra large category needs just 130 planes. This shows China’s aviation projections are more likely to thrive on short-haul flights, despite news Chinese carriers have expanded long-haul, international offerings.

China’s domestic traffic has grown four times over the past 10 years with double-digit growth.

It’s expected to become the world’s largest traffic flow in the coming decade, which would be triple its current level.

Airbus’s chief commercial officer, Christian Scherer, said China would become the “world’s number one aviation market in the very near future.”
