The terms long-haul, bag fees and discount airlines may continue to pop up in the travel world, but new vocabulary will enter the scene this year — changing travel for the better. 

The first major change will involve technology, specifically the capabilities of biometric scanning. Delta Air Lines is testing this new technology at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, where passengers’ faces are scanned when boarding in place of the timely act of manually inspecting passports.

Other airports and airlines that plan to test biometric scanning include Boston (BOS), Detroit (DTW), Los Angeles (LAX) and Orlando (MCO). Car rental service Hertz also uses the technology to accelerate the rental and pick-up processes.

On board planes, classes expanded to cater to all types of travelers. From basic economy to standard economy to premium economy, different tiers serve different needs at various price points to ensure all travelers get what they want out of the air travel experience.

Finally, an uncertain future lies ahead for ultra-long-haul flights. Such flights between destinations like Houston (IAH) and Sydney (SYD) (17.5 hours) and Washington, D.C. (IAD) to Hong Kong (HKG) (17 hours) are great solutions for travelers who abhor layovers. Costs to keep these planes in flight are so high airlines will need to fill them with mostly business-class passengers in order to recoup fuel costs.
