Following a seven-year restoration project, Casa Bonavita, on the island of Malta, reopened. The former private residence has been transformed into a 17-bedroom retreat by The Rug Company founders Suzanne and Christopher Sharp. Rather than create a glossy, generic luxury lodging space, the Sharps were careful to honor the structure’s history, grandeur and singular personality.

“We hope it will be a place where like-minded people will be able to see Malta as we do; a bastion of culture, a fascinating and kitsch mix of Arab and Italian influences framed by baroque architecture,” said Suzanne, strongly influenced in the property’s design choices by her own upbringing on the island.

Located in the village of Attard on Malta’s main island, Casa Bonavita features high ceilings and original architectural elements, all accented by vintage pieces, bespoke commissions, and original pieces from Maltese and Mediterranean artists and artisans. These include pottery from Villa Bologna; antique furnishings; luxuriant textiles; unique frescoes; and bespoke, hand-painted wall coverings in the bar from de Gournay.

Each of the individually designed guestrooms has been configured to provide the comfort of a residential space. Many rooms open directly onto the garden, pool area or their own terraces.

The property’s garden, restored over a 15-year period by Christopher Sharp, is a lush retreat defined by citrus trees, date palms, trailing jasmine, rosemary and bougainvillea. The kitchen and menus are overseen by Executive Chef Dex Oseman of The River Café. Seasonal Mediterranean dishes are highlighted by locally produced ingredients. Menus might include traditional Maltese pastries, freshly prepared pasta or luscious oranges from the property’s own citrus trees.

One of Malta’s renowned Three Villages, Attard is situated between Valletta and the historic walled city of Mdina. Guests can enjoy clifftop strolls, pottery workshops, tours of ancient temples and relaxing meals beside the sea. There are also curated wellness offerings, including spa treatments and therapies, a hammam, cold plunge, and sauna. Guests can also enjoy two swimming pools and a well-equipped gym.

Coming soon: the introduction of The Folly Suite, a private, sheltered residence set away from the main house in a garden-like setting, with its own swimming pool and rooftop terrace.
