The world’s current war on plastic continues to extend to the travel and hospitality industries as California state legislation now outlaws hotel toiletries in small plastic bottles.
Bill AB1162, originally introduced in February, was signed into law by California Governor Gavin Newsom in October. The new law requires hotels to remove from their guestrooms any toiletry items (e.g., shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion) in containers of less than 6 ounces.
Not all hotels have to make the switch, though, as an increasing number of brands adopted their own no-plastic policies. Some chains, like Ace Hotels, offer these amenities in bulk amounts, and, in August, IHG and Marriott announced they would eliminate mini toiletry bottles from properties.
The law will officially go into effect in 2023 for properties that sleep 50 guests or more, and in 2024 for properties that sleep 50 guests or fewer.
