On a recent trip to Las Vegas, my husband Nick and I decided to check out The Wizard of Oz at the Sphere. The idea actually came from my phone. Once it realized we had a Vegas trip booked, the show kept popping up in my newsfeed as a sponsored post. After seeing it one too many times, I gave in and started researching what the experience was all about.
One thing that kept coming up online was people talking about “catching an apple,” which definitely piqued my interest. I found all kinds of tips about the show, including where the best seats are to catch an apple, but since we booked only about a week in advance, our options were very limited. I even read that the apples people catch during the show sometimes end up being sold on eBay afterward, which made the whole thing even more entertaining.
When we entered the theater, the first thing we noticed was just how steep the seating is. It might be the steepest seating I’ve experienced anywhere, which could be a little intimidating for some. But once the show started, that detail quickly faded into the background.
The Sphere truly brings The Wizard of Oz to life. The visuals are stunning, and the massive sphere-shaped screen surrounds you in a way that makes the entire experience feel immersive. When Dorothy’s house is swept up in the tornado, wind rushed through the theater and the seats vibrated, making it feel like we were right there in the storm with her.

There were also some fun interactive moments. At one point, life-sized flying monkeys (or winged monkeys) flew above the audience. Leaves drifted down through the theater and, yes, the apples I had read about ahead of time fell from above.
After the show, we spent some time exploring the lobby, where there are several cool displays and photo opportunities with characters from the film.
Experiencing the Sphere from the inside is impressive enough, but seeing it from the outside lit up with its constantly changing graphics on the Las Vegas skyline is just as memorable. It’s definitely a unique experience. And as for the apples … if you happen to catch one, you might want to hang onto it. Apparently they’ve been popping up on eBay. But if your catching skills are anything like mine, you can also just buy one in the gift shop for around $10.
