I’ve stated over and over in my blog that I believe having the ability to travel is a privilege, whether for business or leisure. There aren’t many downsides to travel in my book, except perhaps when I’m on a business trip and there isn’t much, or any, personal time to see some essential sights. There are, however, some places that I believe deserve the extra time and effort to view, no matter what your timetable looks like. On this historic day, I would like to propose to anyone in Hawaii on business or holiday to visit Pearl Harbor. The history of World War II and the years leading up to it are mesmerizing to me. I can’t pinpoint exactly why. It could be because my grandfather, like many of my generation’s grandparents, fought on the front lines in Europe. They were people I was able to talk with and hear stories from firsthand, leaving me with a personal touch of history. I have, after all, always related better to seeing and hearing rather than reading. I believe that the history of Pearl Harbor sticks out slightly more in my mind because I’ve had the opportunity to visit Pearl Harbor and see the U.S.S. Arizona memorial. The experience was bone-chilling and unforgettable. Please oblige my simple optimism, but perhaps if we all took the extra time to physically visit history’s past in places like Pearl Harbor while on business or vacation, we can help prevent future generations from making the same mistakes. — Alex Young, vice president and associate publisher
