As I’ve mentioned in other blogs, I am not a big fan of winter — let alone snow. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the past year, it’s to roll with the punches.
We’ve had some annoyingly beautiful snowfalls over the past week, so we decided to make it fun while we had free time. To our luck, a simple walk around our apartment complex last Tuesday night was intricate enough and cold enough to make us want to stay inside — ha! Our roads were covered and everything looked like an icy winter wonderland; we even stopped at our neighboring school’s playground and played on the swings, which was fun and scary at the same time.
We went to our local fire department after work last Thursday and took advantage of the amazing sledding hill. It was my first time sledding, so I’ll have to do it a few more times — better prepared — so I can fairly report on how much I enjoy it. But I’d say it was great to find something to enjoy in the snow other than snowball fights and scenic car rides.
I ventured to New York City Friday morning and was able to make it home by Sunday afternoon after the snow had stopped. For once, the view on the New Jersey Turnpike was gorgeous. The sun finally broke through the snow clouds and lit the sky like a Renaissance painting while also thankfully clearing the road for us. There’s more snow predicted this week, which I’m hoping doesn’t ruin our plans to spend a few days in Geneva, New York, enjoying some more fun winter activities.

May 14, 2025Hotel Van Zandt Review
One step onto Austin’s Rainey Street and you’ll feel like you’ve joined the cool kids at the best playground in the city. Just behind the cottage bars, pint-sized skyscrapers soar. One of them, Hotel Van Zandt, the Rainey district's pièce de resistance, beckons with a song-like spirit —apropos because the independently owned property, rife with music motifs, was named after beloved singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. Sixteen stories high, the hotel embodies Austin’s lust for music, manifesting with a vinyl corner; trumpet chandeliers; myriad musical references; replica vintage posters in frames; and its own live music venue, which doubles as its acclaimed restaurant, Geraldine’s. Don’t miss the mesmerizing installation of colorful origami-like birds composed from vinyl records that flitter from an old phonograph.
