Retro Row, Long Beach!

by Maria Angeles

Nov 11, 2021

As you might remember, I relocated to Long Beach earlier this year after living in just about every corner of West Los Angeles. One of my favorite things about living in Los Angeles is knowing I will never run out of things to discover, and that continues to be the case now in a neighborhood I very much don’t know.

I recently came across the Retro Row neighborhood in Long Beach, around 4th Street and Walnut. A few weeks ago my friends and I did a pizza pick-up order from this adorable little shop called Little Coyote Pizza — highly recommend! And since we just did a drive-by through the neighborhood, I only got a taste of the shops and eateries, but I knew I had to go back.

So I finally got a chance to get back there. and I definitely found some gems I think you’ll enjoy. If you love a good vintage shop, this neighborhood is a must-visit. So many throwback items everywhere, I enjoyed a little trip down memory lane finding Spice Girls Tour Barbie, Gremlins plastic lunch boxes and The Magic School Bus sweaters. If you’re seeking unique furniture, there’s definitely something for you here, too. There are some great upcycling shops you need to check out. I also discovered my new favorite shop, Song Bird. I picked up a witty birthday card for a friend, a cute little print of a dapper tiger and too many Frida Kahlo items. You’ll even find a great big pile of clothes you can dive into if you’re the adventurous shopper and can take your clothing for $2 per item. We certainly live in high times of upcycling and recycling.

Retro Row

La Bomba clothing store offers a great selection of vintage clothing.

I also may have found my new favorite coffee shop, Salud Juice; it’s Harry Potter-themed! If you get it, you get it. But either way, they make great drinks, and I love supporting local businesses any day.

Retro Row

Salud Juice really knows how to build an ambiance with your drink.

The Flight Less Taken: Unsung Carriers Whisk You Away to Far-Flung Destinations

The miracle of flight feels slightly less miraculous these days. Endless delays, cramped seating and shortchanged amenities feel par for the course, and one can easily forget the wondrous fact that you’re hurtling above planet Earth, soaring above the clouds and across the skies to your destination of choice. In the olden days, you were limited to the fallibility of your outrigger canoe or horse-drawn carriage. It’s not hyperbolic to invoke the invention of the wheel when reminding oneself to stay calm and carry on in coach.

Review: Bodysgallen Hall

The National Trust owns more than 500 historic buildings across the United Kingdom, each offering a vivid sense of its particular era. In common with many visitors, I often find myself wondering what it would be like to actually live in such a place. Imagine sitting, for instance, in one of those ancient oak-paneled drawing rooms at night, with the fire roaring and the wind rattling the ancient mullioned windows. I didn’t have to imagine it. Here I was, immersed in history in 17th-century Bodysgallen Hall in North Wales.
