My husband and I recently celebrated our wedding anniversary with a night out in Philadelphia.
We started our evening with a visit to Olde City Escape Games. As it was the Fourth of July weekend, we thought it was only appropriate to play the American Revolution-themed room, A Quest for Freedom. It felt like a patriotic start to the weekend, made even better by escaping the room with time to spare!
We celebrated our victory with a cocktail at one of our favorite Philadelphia bars, Sassafras. I ordered a Bee’s Knees, with gin, lavender and lemon. My husband also chose a gin cocktail, a Negroni. After finishing our drinks, we made our way to Forsythia for our dinner reservations.
Forsythia serves inventive French cuisine, with a seasonally rotating menu. We brought our appetites and decided to share several dishes, including the daily special pasta. From the small plates section we ordered corn beignets, English pea gazpacho and stuffed crepes. Two vegetables were available during our visit (creamed corn and tomatoes), and we ordered both. In addition to the fava bean pasta, we also ordered tuna niçoise for our entrée. While everything was unique and flavorful, the gazpacho, crepes and creamed corn were my favorites. The light gazpacho was topped with crab, lemon crème fraîche and hazelnut crumb. The seasonal crepe was filled with rabbit and creamed leeks and topped with hot honey. The indulgent creamed corn was finished with foie gras, crème fraîche and sherry. We ended our meal by splitting the banana pot de crème, which our waitress added a candle to in honor of our anniversary.

Sep 23, 2023When the Sun Goes Down, the Party Begins on Mykonos
There is something magical about sipping a glass of local wine while watching the sun slip into the Aegean Sea as the afterglow tinges traditional, white-washed Cycladic houses with glorious shades of rose, purple and gold. Ancient Greeks believed Helios, the Sun God, caused sunsets by driving his fiery chariot into the sea. Standing at water’s edge in Mykonos, watching the sky slowly turn from purple to inky black, you almost believe it.

I hadn’t even made it to my first cup of coffee when I got an early phone call from my sister, who lives two time zones away. “OMG, Kristy, Patsy Cline came on twice while I was driving the kids to school today,” she laughed. “You know what that means, right?” We both gasped and then instantly began singing the lyrics to “La Bamba,” an inside joke we’d shared since our family’s Alaskan cruise decades ago when we, unintentionally, won the ship’s karaoke contest among a sea of Patsy Cline tributes.
