I have been to many Chicago Blackhawks games but never one like their recent game on New Year’s Eve. Instead of their usual United Center home, the Blackhawks hosted the St. Louis Blues at Wrigley Field.
Debuting in 2008 in Buffalo, the NHL Winter Classic is an annual game played in an outdoor stadium. This was the second time it has been played at Wrigley Field and the first time for a repeat matchup. The Blackhawks hosted Detroit in the second Winter Classic.

The NHL went all out for this game. Several Blackhawks legends were announced. The players decked out in Chicago gear took a special train from their hotel to the ball park. The ceremonies featured bagpipes. One of the strangest sights was watching the players in skates hobble down the stairs to the field.
The crowd of almost 41,000 rocked Wrigley Field with thunderous applause throughout the pregame ceremonies and into the game. Despite a disappointing 6–2 loss, the crowd remained loud until the final buzzer and then once again for a final round of appreciative applause.
