Miami’s Drive-Thru Art Gallery

by Bill Lodzinski

Oct 4, 2019

When it comes to street art, there is nothing more impactful and awe-inspiring than murals. Many cities such as Philadelphia have impressive collections that highlight the city’s spirit, attitudes and history. Philadelphia has been called the City of Murals for its amazing collection of socially conscious, civic-minded and community-driven murals. However, there is a section of Miami that is literally an outdoor art gallery. The murals in the Wynwood Art District may not be as large in scale as those found in Philadelphia, but they are just as large in artistry.

The Wynwood Art District Association was founded in 2003 by a group of art dealers, artists and local curators. The area boasts one of the most eclectic and contemporary collections of murals in the country. It covers many city blocks and is just around the corner from the buzz of South Beach. It has been growing in scale since its inception and has transformed an area once in decline (and considered a blight) to one that is vibrant and full of pride. Once lifeless warehouses have been transformed into a vibrant art museum. The formerly abandoned streets are now bustling with activity, drawing artists, visitors and hipsters alike.

My visit to Miami always includes a drive through the area. It is like going through a drive-thru art gallery. It’s an artist version of a scenic drive. I am devoting most of the space on my blog for viewing versus reading. There are just so many images to share of great art that I don’t want to waste this opportunity with words. Pictures don’t do it justice, but it will give you a visual treat nonetheless. So take a “drive” through these photos and enjoy the view.

Paris has lots of modern, newly built hotel towers, but it may be better to find a historic property, well cared for, a 5-minute walk to Quartier-Pigalle and with a view of Basilica of Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre from your window. Walk around the 9th arrondissement, sample the bars and cafés, and make time for sleeping or kissing.

Alligators, Tarzan and the Creature from Black Lagoon in Wakulla Springs, Florida

Close to the side of my tour boat — make that very close — a mother alligator rests in the reedy shallows of the Wakulla Springs shoreline, her long, prehistoric-looking nose pointed in my direction. If she thinks I’m going to bother her fleet of small offspring, also visible near the shore, she is mistaken. I’m too busy looking for any relatives of Tarzan, or for the 1954 cult movie monster Creature from the Black Lagoon who might be lurking in the trees.
