While Chicago‘s first snowstorm of the year took place outside, I was ensconced in literary goodness at the Chicago Book Expo. The fourth annual event took place at Columbia College and featured many local authors and publishers, a book fair, readings, workshops, programs and more. Numerous speakers were scheduled throughout the day.
I had the pleasure of attending sessions by Charles Finch (author of the Charles Lenox series of mystery novels and The Last Enchantments) and Ina Pinkney (Chicago culinary icon and restaurateur known as the “Breakfast Queen”). There were many exhibits by local publishers and presses. In an era when everything can be found online, it is so cool to see independents still out there. I have discovered a lot of up-and-coming authors through local independent companies.
Of course, another big part of the event is actually acquiring new books. Again, I will sound old, but actual printed books have a certain feel to them that cannot be captured digitally. It was also great to see so many younger people picking up books. The weather kept getting worse all day, but it did not stop the book lovers. The Chicago Book Expo cannot be stopped by a little snow (or even a lot of it).

Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a small town that’s big on historic landmarks, buildings, parks and Western lore. While most of the properties within historic buildings are upscale, Bishop’s Lodge is now a member of Auberge Resorts Collection thanks to a painstaking restoration, luxury appointments, commitment to personal service and wide range of exclusive activities.
