A Fun Day with Loyola Women’s Basketball

by John Wroblewski

Dec 1, 2021

Over the last few years, the Loyola University men’s basketball team has gotten a lot of national exposure. Meanwhile, the women’s team has quietly been on the rise. On Sunday I ventured to my first Ramblers women’s basketball home game.Loyola Women's Basketball

In her sixth season as head coach, Kate Achter is leading a resurgence in the Loyola program. Last season, Achter guided the Ramblers to a berth in the Women’s Basketball Invitational, the program’s first post-season appearance. Although early in the season, the Ramblers are off to a hot start at 4–2.

On Sunday the Ramblers beat Miami of Ohio 69–52. After the Ramblers jumped to a 20–10 lead, the game was never really in doubt. Junior guard Sam Galanopoulos, niece of Global Traveler staffer Louie Atsaves, led the way in the first quarter with six points. Sam finished with 11 points, second on the team to Allison Day with 20.

The Ramblers play at Joseph J. Gentile Arena, located on the Loyola campus on the far north side of Chicago. Opened in 1996 and renovated in 2011, “The Joe” is a beautiful 5,000-seat facility with new, huge video boards capturing the game action. The stands were a sea of maroon and gold, and fans loudly supported their team.

After the game, I got a victory pizza from Giordano’s to take home. It was a deliciously perfect end to the day.

The Peninsula Bangkok Resort Review

Bangkok is one of the world’s most exciting cities, and we — me and my wife — have front-row seats. From the wood-paneled living room of our 16th-floor deluxe suite in The Peninsula, we look out on a panoramic sweep of the Chao Phraya River, one of the city’s most important routes. Day and night the river jostles with ferries, cruise boats, barges, speedboats and distinctive long-tail boats. We view it all in air-conditioned comfort.

The Argosaronic Islands Are Calling

The Saronic or Argo Saronic Islands of Greece call travelers to explore its seven small islands and islets brimming with history, natural sites and more. With most easily accessible by boat, the islands’ proximity to ports of Athens make the Saronic Islands an ideal destination for those preferring shorter boat rides. In fact, trips from Athens ports to the islands take only between 10 minutes and two hours, depending on the island you choose, making them perfect for day or weekend trips. From Piraeus port, you can access Hydra, Spetses, Aegina and Poros directly. Come explore these stunning islands with us and find the inspiration to plan your next trip to these islands. Hydra Hydra town curves around a slope overlooking the Argosaronic Gulf like an amphitheater and is considered one of the most romantic destinations in Greece. Most unique to the island is its lack of vehicles. People on the island get around on mules and donkeys as well as water taxis, making for a peaceful and laid-back day. Hydra lies a two-hour ferry ride from Piraeus port in Athens.
