Bleisure Travel Proves a Long-Lasting Trend

While bleisure travel receives quite a lot of attention, one Harvard Business study says it’s not as revolutionary a trend as it seems. Compiling four years of data from Carlson Wagonlit Travel, the study examined the trend that has already benefitted about 60 percent of business travelers, with many attributing the trend to the more recently blurred lines between work and personal life and the technological advances allowing employees and companies to constantly remain in contact.

According to the study, in 2015 approximately 20 percent of business travelers took bleisure trips, accounting for 7 percent of all business trips, inspiring companies to rethink travel policies and incentives. However, despite this, since 2010 bleisure travel did not increase and remained to account for 7 percent of all business trips without change.

When comparing all travelers, regardless of how often they travel for business, they generally take 1.4 bleisure trips per year. Those who take fewer business trips combine leisure with business more frequently, while those who travel most often for business are less likely to do so. Also, in conflict with some studies, the Harvard data showed millennials are not a driving force in bleisure travel. However, because millennials travel for work less frequently, it does appear they’re traveling for bleisure more than their heavily traveled, older counterparts in some instances. In all age groups, females are more likely to enjoy bleisure travel.

In general, business trips requiring a longer travel distance were more likely to become bleisure trips. Singapore is one of the most popular destinations for bleisure travel. However, some short-haul destinations are desirable in the same manner, such as Miami, New York, San Francisco and Denver.

Do you feel bleisure travel is relatively new, or is it something you’ve enjoyed as a business traveler for years? Do you take length of travel into consideration when planning a bleisure trip? Email us and let us know. Please include your full name and location with your email.
