With a rich history and influential art scene, Vienna brims with museums showcasing the destination’s architectural significance, past military involvement, musical masterminds and more. Here are a few to note.
Art
Built in 1891 near the Imperial Palace to house the royal family’s collection, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wein features important works including Raphael’s “Madonna in the Meadow” and Vermeer’s “The Allegory of Painting.” It also houses the largest Bruegel collection in the world. Current and upcoming exhibits include “Stairway to Klimt,” marking the centenary of the death of famed Austrian painter Gustav Klimt; “The Shape of Time,” showcasing the flow of time and space and the evolution of ideas and images across centuries; and “Focus Monuments: The House of Medusa,” an exhibition of Roman archaeological finds.
A magnificent Baroque palace and art collection house in one, Belvedere showcases some of Austria’s most valuable pieces by artists including Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka; while Albertina’s latest exhibition presents modern masterpieces by Monet, Picasso and Baselitz.
History
Naturhistorisches Museum Vienna is an impressive 20-million object display, tracing the history of the earth, from gemstones and minerals to archaeological finds and animal specimens. The museum’s title showpiece is the 29,500-year-old “Venus von Willendorf,” found in 1908, an Early Stone Age sculpture.
Documenting the volatile history of Austrian military affairs, the Museum of Military History (https://www.hgm.at/) displays weapons, armor, tanks, uniforms, photographs, badges of honor and more — all within a huge military complex, Vienna’s Arsenal, erected in the wake of the 1848 revolution.
Get better acquainted with famed Austrian composer Mozart in his only surviving Viennese residence. Home to the composer 1784–87, the Mozarthaus Vienna features exhibits and audiovisual installations, showcasing his historic career.
