A new Beatles attraction opened last month in Liverpool. For decades, Beatles fans flocked to the red gates at Strawberry Field, but now they are able to enter the grounds and gardens that inspired the 1967 creation of “Strawberry Fields Forever.”

The new attraction includes the original red gates, removed from the site in 2010; an interactive visitor exhibition; a virtual Mellotron allowing guests to recreate the opening chords of “Strawberry Fields Forever;” a community café; gift shop; and information on the history of the grounds, a former Salvation Army children’s home.

The site is open daily and exploring the grounds is free. Exhibition entrance is £12.95. Money raised from the site benefits Salvation Army initiatives that help local youth find work.

“John Lennon found sanctuary here as a child and that’s exactly what we want to offer by opening the Strawberry Field gates for good. We know thousands of Beatles fans already visit the site and we saw an opportunity to channel that interest into a responsible tourist attraction that will support local people and businesses,” said Anthony Cotterill, commissioner and territorial commander, The Salvation Army. “The Salvation Army ran a children’s home at Strawberry Field from 1936 until 2005. In that time, we helped some of Liverpool’s most vulnerable children. Seventy years later, we are using Strawberry Field to give Liverpool’s young people a step onto the employment ladder. I like to think that John Lennon would be pleased that his special association with Strawberry Field is being used in this way.”
