Long-distance travelers who once relied on free checked bags on international journeys will soon experience a serious inconvenience when it comes to luggage. In an effort to keep prices low and compete with the onslaught of discount long-haul airlines, the major players (specifically Delta Air Lines) remove some once-included passenger services.

Beginning in April, Delta passengers who book a basic-economy ticket on a trans-Atlantic flight will incur a checked bag fee of $50 for the first bag and $100 for the second. However, travelers who book tickets in the main cabin or in a Comfort+ seat can check one bag for free and a second bag for an additional fee. Other domestic carriers may follow this pattern, but currently American Airlines and United Airlines offer one free checked bag, with an additional fee for the second.

Across the pond, British Airways implements similar restrictions, eliminating its free-checked-bag policy for basic-fare travelers.
