Eunice Fried is Global Traveler’s wine columnist and the director of GT’s annual Wines on the Wing Survey. A New York-based wine and travel writer, Fried’s last book, Burgundy: The Wines, The People, won three writing awards. Her articles have also appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers including American Way (American Airlines), National Geographic Traveler, Elle, Private Clubs, The New York Times, Dallas Morning News and others. She has traveled through most of the world’s wine regions.

Don’t Overlook Southern England’s Sparkling Wine

THE GRAPE BASE IS VIRTUALLY the same as Champagne — Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. They are made by the same two-fermentation Champagne method. Bold and Beautiful

THE REGION OF UMBRIA lies in the center of Italy, sheltered on all sides by other Italian regions, including Tuscany on the northwest. As well as medieval hilltop villages and historic towns such as Assisi and Spoletto, Umbria is known for its white truffles in the fall and for its wines, particularly those made of Sagrantino. It is, in fact, the only wine region in Italy that grows the red Sagrantino grape.
