Art Basel Miami Beach gets underway Dec. 6–9, complete with a dance stage constructed out of trash by artist Abraham Cruzvillegas; and exhibitions at 16 galleries of works by six innovative artists still raising eyebrows decades after their emergence in the global art world.

Part of the citywide art celebration can be viewed at Florida International University’s Frost Art Museum, Miami’s Smithsonian Affiliate. New programming and exhibitions include “Relational Undercurrents: Contemporary Art of the Caribbean Archipelago.” On view through Jan. 13, 2019, the exhibition explores global commonalities through works by 67 contemporary Caribbean artists representing 14 separate Caribbean countries, including Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Curaçao, Aruba, Saint Maarten, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Trinidad, Jamaica, The Bahamas, Barbados and Saint Vincent.

Through Dec. 9, “The Writing on the Wall: Hank Willis Thomas and Dr. Baz Dreisinger” offers a collaborative installation of gathered letters, essays, poems, stories, notes and other written works by prisoners around the planet, designed to focus attention on the issue of mass incarceration.

Also Dec. 9, the 15^th Annual Art Basel Breakfast in the Park presents Elizabeth Turk, during which Turk, an internationally noted sculptor working in marble, will speak. Visitors can participate in a complimentary breakfast served outdoors and enjoy guided tours of the university’s Sculpture Park and museum exhibitions.
