Alice in Wonderland Tour in Oxford

Missed Alice’s Day in Oxford, England, on July 1? Not to worry — you can enjoy exploring sites connected to the perennially loved Alice in Wonderland story year-round in this historic academic city, where the story’s author, Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson), was once a student at Christ Church College. Stroll through the college grounds, where you can look for the stained-glass Alice window and carved Cheshire Cat’s face in the dining hall, and visit the gardens, where one of the beautiful trees is said to have been the basis for Carroll’s perched, grinning feline. Peruse the keepsakes at Alice’s Shop, once known as the Old Sheep, where the real-life Alice Liddell was fond of shopping for sweets.

Take your shopping with you to nearby Café Loco, where the menu includes a themed Mad Hatter’s Tea. Located on St. Aldates Street, the café is famous for the Wonderland wall murals and comfy window seats overlooking Christ Church College. Carry on down your Oxford rabbit hole on Alice’s Parks and Pleasure Walk, a 90-minute excursion through lesser-known areas of the city. Author and historian Mark Davies, who also bears the distinction of being the only guide endorsed by the Lewis Carroll Society, leads the tour. Finally, view the city as Carroll, Alice Liddell and her sisters once did while floating leisurely down the River Cherwell in a punt from Cherwell Boathouse. End your Alice adventure at the Eagle and Child, a pub known for its literary connections to authors including Carroll and his friends — authors J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis — who were often found in a cozy corner talking about their writing projects.

The Peninsula Bangkok Resort Review

Bangkok is one of the world’s most exciting cities, and we — me and my wife — have front-row seats. From the wood-paneled living room of our 16th-floor deluxe suite in The Peninsula, we look out on a panoramic sweep of the Chao Phraya River, one of the city’s most important routes. Day and night the river jostles with ferries, cruise boats, barges, speedboats and distinctive long-tail boats. We view it all in air-conditioned comfort.

Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History

All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.
